Reinventing Borde Hill: future-proofing a heritage landscape through ecology, learning and play

Reinventing Borde Hill reimagines one of Sussex’s most cherished landscapes as a place where heritage, learning and wellbeing come together. Developed in partnership with Borde Hill Gardens and funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the project aims to connect diverse local communities with the restorative power of nature. Central to the vision is the belief that access to green space can replenish both mind and body, while also fostering meaningful connections across generations. Proposals safeguard the nationally significant botanical collection, enhance the long-term sustainability of the estate, and improve accessibility for people who have limited opportunities to enjoy outdoor landscapes. By strengthening opportunities for play, learning and wellbeing, the project aspires to inspire future custodians of this remarkable site.

At the heart of the transformation is a new Eco Lodge, positioned beside Robertsmere Lake and Dinosaur Wood. Conceived as a year-round community hub, the lodge will be constructed from timber harvested on the estate, embedding sustainability into its very fabric. It will provide classrooms, wellbeing facilities, toilets, showers and a café, supporting a wide programme of activities including wild swimming, outdoor workshops and seasonal events. By distributing activity across the wider parkland, the lodge will also relieve pressure on the historic core gardens and their internationally important collection of rare plants and trees. Complementing this, Lost Play will introduce an immersive landscape for discovery, inviting children and young people to explore the story of Borde Hill from the age of the dinosaurs to the present day. Timber play structures, a nature-inspired adventure playground and accessible woodland trails will encourage exploration, while interpretation and storytelling will share the site’s unique botanical heritage. Designed in collaboration with local schools and community groups, structured activities will nurture curiosity, creativity and a sense of belonging. Together, these new interventions weave ecology, heritage and play into a layered experience that positions Borde Hill as both a cultural landmark and a restorative landscape for future generations.
