Erith Riverside Gardens: Reconnecting riverside green space with the Thames

Erith Riverside Gardens is the only publicly accessible green space along the Thames in the London Borough of Bexley. As part of the borough’s wider regeneration strategy, Root and Erect were commissioned to transform this historically significant yet underutilised site into a vibrant, inclusive destination that re-establishes the community’s relationship with the river. Previously severed from the Thames by 1980s flood defences, the gardens now offer a new riverside promenade, playground, outdoor gym, over 250 metres of rain gardens, and an accessible route to the water’s edge. The design draws on Erith’s industrial and maritime heritage, reinterpreting local landmarks such as the former Railway Station Wharf through play elements and sculptural interventions. A ship’s mast marks the new community growing zone, while reclaimed granite from the Thames Embankment forms seating, play features and a five-metre-long picnic table. Natural stone channels, attenuation cells and enriched rain gardens support sustainable drainage and biodiversity, reducing peak water flow and enhancing ecological value. The project exemplifies climate-conscious design, keeping nearly 1,000 tonnes of material on site and reusing demolition waste as sub-base for paths and hardstanding.

Community engagement was central throughout. Root and Erect worked in close collaboration with local stakeholders, including Friends of Riverside Gardens Erith (FORGE), to develop a shared vision for the space. A series of design workshops and public events helped identify key priorities: restoring views of the Thames, incorporating new play and community gardening facilities, and increasing biodiversity while managing flood risk. These ambitions informed the layout and spatial hierarchy of the park, ensuring diverse use without compromising its quiet, green character.

Raised planting beds, pollinator-friendly habitats, and bird and insect boxes offer opportunities for stewardship and engagement across generations. Designed as a park by and for its community, Riverside Gardens now balances leisure, heritage and resilience in a space that reclaims Erith’s riverfront identity. Officially opened in August 2025, the project marks a major milestone in the Greater Erith Programme, signalling a renewed civic presence and greener future for the town.
