Newhaven: Pedestrian-focused High Street improvements

Lewes District Council has named the Erect Architecture and Studio ONB as the two winners of its competitions for a series of wayfinding upgrades across Newhaven, East Sussex.

Erect Architecture has won a £1.5 million project to provide ‘pedestrian-focused streetscape improvements and better wayfinding in the town centre and at the Elphick Road pause point, the Bridge Street to North Way connection, and from High Street to Church Hill.

Newhaven enggement workshop coming soon

Workshops and interviews with local businesses and community members are currently underway, working in collaboration with the people of Newhaven to enhance the public realm of the High Street. This community-centred project seeks to bring about long-desired and much-needed improvements, with the ultimate goal of realising the 2030 vision outlined in the Council's Neighbourhood Plan.

Erect Architecture will also work with Studio Dekka, along with Civic Engineers and graphic designers Polimekanos, to engage with local stakeholders and to design and deliver distinct, attractive, and better-connected places in the heart of Newhaven.

Newhaven is a historic port town of around 12,000 inhabitants a short distance from Lewes in East Sussex. Local landmarks include Newhaven Fort and the harbour, whence two ferry services a day depart to Dieppe in Normandy.

The deadline for completion of the works is March 2026.
