Wood Wharf Play Space 4: Whale's Landing

Exciting to see that our second playground for under 5s in Wood Wharf recently opened to the public.

Our design was inspired by the occasional whale mistakenly swimming up the Thames and celebrates these gentle giants of the ocean. The London docklands also used to house whaling activities in centuries past.

The playground centres on the impressive bulk of a ‘whale’s body’ resting next to a textured bank, which offers sliding and climbing opportunities. The ‘whale’s spout’ is a hand-pumped, all-directional water fountain.

A ramp and mosaic embellished steps with baleen-inspired railings lead to a ‘whale watching’ lookout which ties in with the surrounding park landscape of formal trees.

The play offer is broad, with role play, sand and water co-operative and constructive play as well as motoric and social play.
