The Greenway offers an important route for pedestrians and cyclists between Victoria Park in the west and Beckton in the east. It runs on top of the Northern outfall sewer by Victorian engineer Joseph Bazalgette.

In 2008, the Olympic Delivery Authority held a competition to find the architect for what was to be one of the main entry points to the Olympic site. At the time, the Greenway was characterised by neglect, low visibility and difficult access.

Our proposal pursued four key aims:

Make It Specific & Create Identity: Celebrate Victorian engineering and the industrial heritage of the East End

Create Places & Become a Destination: To avoid a thoroughfare, places were conceived in connection with existing and new amenities, historic views and attractions.

Improve Visibility, Connectivity and Orientation: Open up views. Overcome separations through new 'scent' bridges.

Involve Local Communities: The regeneration was based on a programme involving local communities to create a sense of ownership and a distinct local identity.
